Pleats Please Issey Miyake
Pleats Please Issey Miyake became its own label with the Spring/Summer 1994 collection, growing out of the pleating work Miyake first showed in 1988. The technique reverses normal production: each piece is cut and sewn oversized from a yarn developed in-house, then pleated afterwards, so the folds are permanent and the garment settles into whatever shape the wearer gives it. Everything is light, machine washable and folds flat to almost nothing. Dresses, tunics and long skirts, straight and tapered trousers, cardigans and long-sleeved tops, scarves and totes, in black and grey through to the bright, flat colours the line is known for.
