A Pause in the Fast Lane
Yohji Yamamoto, at 80 years old, urges us to slow down and savor human nature rather than race through life. His Fall/Winter 2024 POUR HOMME collection offers a rare moment of reflection in an industry obsessed with speed, chasing trends, and highlighting youth. Yamamoto's collection stands as a quiet rebellion, slowing down time to focus on what truly matters.
Tradition and Family at the Heart
Rooted in tradition and history, Yamamoto draws from his personal experiences, having lived through the darkness of WWII. Backstage, cigarette in hand, he shared how he invited close friends of the brand to walk the show, symbolizing a family-like unity. The runway told a story of togetherness, featuring models of all ages, genders, and backgrounds walking in pairs—resembling a family leisurely strolling through life. Icons like Wim Wenders and Norman Reedus embodied this narrative, creating a powerful yet intimate atmosphere.
A Collection of Freedom and Expression
Yamamoto’s designs remain a canvas for freedom of expression. His signature oversized coats, boxy jackets, and tailored suits carried cryptic, playful messages like, “YoYo loves black. Is your underwear black? Is it transparent?” The playful yet profound pieces embodied the designer’s philosophy. Accompanied by unique renditions of Radiohead’s “Creep” and Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” the show’s soundtrack served as a soft backdrop, allowing the clothing to take center stage. In Yamamoto's world, fashion is not about making noise—it’s about speaking in whispers that linger long after the moment has passed.
